How to clean up un-emailable contacts without losing data

The instinct when your contact bill jumps is to start deleting people. Don't — deletion is permanent, and you lose history you may need later. There's a safer lever.

Non-marketing, not deleted

On HubSpot, setting a contact to non-marketing removes them from your billable count without deleting the record. Their history stays intact; they just stop costing you money and can't be sent marketing email. It's fully reversible.

Who's safe to flip

  • Unsubscribed — they opted out, you can't email them anyway.
  • Hard-bounced — the address is dead.
  • Long-inactive — no opens or clicks in a year or more (your call on the threshold).

Leave anyone with a recent purchase or genuine engagement alone, even if they've gone quiet — those are the contacts worth keeping billable.

Timing matters

Marketing-status changes take effect on your next update date — the 1st of the month or your renewal date. So the cleanup has to happen before the billing snapshot to keep you under tier. Miss it, and you're locked into the higher tier until renewal.
