Why HubSpot bills you for contacts you can't even email

If you use HubSpot Marketing Hub, your bill is tied to one number: your marketing-contact count. The trap is that this count includes people you're not even allowed to email anymore — contacts who unsubscribed, and addresses that hard-bounced.

The contacts you pay for but can't reach

When someone unsubscribes, HubSpot keeps them as a marketing contact unless you explicitly set them to non-marketing. Same with hard bounces — an address that's permanently dead still sits in your billable count. On a list with a few years of history, this dead weight is often 20–40% of the total.

You're paying full tier price for people who will never open another email.

Why crossing a tier is worse than it looks

HubSpot upgrades you automatically the moment you cross a contact threshold — but it never automatically downgrades you. Clean up the next day and the higher bill stays until your renewal date. A single crossing on Professional can mean roughly $250/month locked in for the rest of your term.

What you can do about it

  • Audit your marketing contacts for unsubscribed and hard-bounced records.
  • Set the dead ones to non-marketing before your next billing snapshot — this takes them off the count.
  • Watch your headroom so you know before you're about to cross, not after.

That last point is the hard part: HubSpot won't warn you before a crossing, because the crossing is revenue for them. That's the gap Bill Guard fills.
